The planetary boundaries, a concept launched by the Stockholm Resilience Centre in 2009, present the limits within which humanity can operate safely without jeopardizing the stability of the Earth system. The nine critical processes refer to: climate change; novel entities; stratospheric ozone depletion; atmospheric aerosol loading; ocean acidification; modification of biogeochemical flows; freshwater change; land system change and biosphere integrity.

The topic of planetary boundaries is gaining urgency, as scientists recently confirmed that seven out of nine planetary boundaries have been crossed. To address this, FRDO-CFDD hold a conference on planetary boundaries on the 17th of December 2025. Additionally, the council has prepared a background paper outlining the concept of planetary boundaries as well as the current status in Belgium.
